Classical guitar and voice step into the spotlight for this Discover online concert on 29 November, a pairing still too little seen on stages despite its hypnotic power. With tickets starting from just $5, give yourself over to the immersive sound worlds conjured up by guitarist Jonathan Paget and soprano Rachelle Durkin, who will fill homes with music drawn from different folk traditions around the world.
The livestreamed concert begins with Britten’s Folk Songs for Voice and Guitar, the vocal model for which was Peter Pears, Britten’s partner in life and music. The composer’s characteristic gift for word setting and vocal writing is on full display here, and many of the songs are a poignant exploration of life and its brevity. These works are followed by an excerpt from British composer David Braid’s song cycle Songs of Contrasting Subjects, which sets texts by Shakespeare and Bunyan.
Other highlights include Villa-Lobos’ aria from his series of suites, Bachianas Brasileiras, a haunting meditation on the evening sky, Brouwer’s 'Balada de la Doncella Enamorada' from El Decamerón Negro, which tells the story of a warrior who wishes to be a musician; and De Falla’s Siete canciones populares españolas, a setting of seven folk songs from different regions of Spain.
