The viola takes centre stage this November when Christopher Moore presents this intimate recital for Melbourne Morning Masters, partnered with pianist Caroline Almonte. Both fixtures of the Melbourne music scene, together they will present the Brahms Viola Sonata in E Flat, a mellow, glowing work originally composed for the clarinet. An ideal showcase for their sensitive musicianship and rapport, marvel at the range of colours and emotions they are able to draw out of this special work.
The Sonata is perfectly programmed alongside Rebecca Clarke’s Morpheus, written in 1917 and reflective of the composer’s own mastery of the viola. Highly influenced by French Impressionist masters like Debussy, the work is both romantic and wistful, awash in subtle emotion.
A highlight of the recital is the world premiere of Alice Humphries’ new work for viola and piano, written for Moore and Almonte and conceived of as a companion piece to Britten’s Lachrymae, which is also on the program. Humphries’ body of work is characterised by her versatile influences, drawing from jazz, classical, folk, and electroacoustic sounds, presenting rich sound worlds that embrace both the man-made and natural.
