Out of the box

Acclaimed violinist Pekka Kuusisto and award-winning singer-songwriter Gabriel Kahane collaborate on a new genre-defying work which explores, with wry charm and piercing insight, what it means to make chamber music in the twenty-first century.

Pekka Kuusisto is an acclaimed violinist. Gabriel Kahane is a composer, singer and multi-instrumentalist. Together they are Council, a genre-crossing, song-singing, feeling-having duo whose debut album is powered by joy, wonder, nostalgia, grief and life.
As Council they embark on a new collaboration, commissioned for recording and performance by an international partnership including Musica Viva Australia. The relaxed, intimate evening is an exploration of what it means to be artists in the 21st century; artists for whom honouring a classical heritage is as important as chasing the new. Be fascinated, entertained, moved and changed by what they make.
"Pekka Kuusisto…surely has the most personal sound of any classical violinist now alive "
— Telegraph
"Kuusisto and Kahane gave a masterclass on post-genre creation and performance."
— Limelight
"Kahane was intently focussed on Kuusisto, and his own delicate touch was a perfect match for Kuusisto’s gentle tone."
— Classic Melbourne
