The Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition (MICMC) is one of the world’s most respected chamber music competitions. Over its 30+ year history MICMC has been a launching pad for the successful careers of many internationally recognised chamber ensembles.
Underpinned by a major grant from Creative Victoria, Musica Viva produced MICMC for the first time in 2018, with strategic support from the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) and the Melbourne Recital Centre (MRC). In 2022, Musica Viva will present the 9th Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition, proudly supported once again by its Principal Partner Creative Victoria and Strategic Partners ANAM and MRC.
However, presenting an event of the size and scale of MICMC is only possible with the support of generous individuals and other partners. In order to bring the 9th MICMC to life, we seek your support and offer a number of unique opportunities to contribute to this extraordinary event. These include:
Artistic Director Chair
The Artistic Director selects competitors, jurors and repertoire, commissions new works and is the heart of the Competition. A gift in this category will support Wilma Smith in her role as Artistic Director of the 9th Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition.
Musica Viva is committed to supporting young musicians in their artistic development and providing access to all ensembles that demonstrate the level of artistic talent necessary to compete in this prestigious and career changing competition.
A gift in this category will provide a quartet with airfares to Australia and accommodation during their stay in Melbourne. As a Quartet Sponsor you will enjoy a private dinner with the ensemble you support, premium seating at all heats and finals and an invitation to a champagne reception to welcome the artists to Melbourne.
A gift in this category will provide a trio with airfares to Australia and accommodation during their stay in Melbourne. As a Trio Sponsor you will enjoy a private dinner with the ensemble you support, premium seating at all heats and finals, and an invitation to a champagne reception to welcome the artists to Melbourne.
An essential instrument common to each trio and quartet is the cello. Transporting these valuable instruments across the world with due care requires the purchase of an additional airline seat.
A gift in this category will support the cost of flying sixteen cellos across the world – and back again!
An international jury of highly respected musicians and music industry professionals will adjudicate the 9th Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition. This jury will be hand selected by Artistic Director, Wilma Smith and chosen with consideration for experience, reputation, instrumentation, gender balance and influence in the international chamber music world.
While in Melbourne, select jury members will engage in masterclasses with students from the Australian National Academy of Music.
A gift in this category will support the cost of bringing seven internationally distinguished musicians to Melbourne, providing accommodation during their stay and a series of workshops and masterclasses for young Australian musicians.
You may consider joining with a group of friends or like-minded individuals in a syndicate to support the 9th Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition. This is a wonderful way to become involved in nurturing the careers of young musicians.
Part of the artistic mission of MICMC is to support and promote Australian composition. Two young Australian composers will be selected to write original works that will be prepared and performed by finalists as a compulsory element of their competition repertoire. Commissioning is a gift to the future of Australian music and will help in securing the future careers of the brightest young talent in this area.
