SYDNEY COFFEE CONCERTS SERIES 2017
The season opens with a fresh breath of new musical air from talented young Sydney composer Elizabeth Younan. Her quartet ‘Interwoven’ was composed as part of Sydney Conservatorium’s National Women Composers Development Program and is heard here for the first time in public. Beethoven’s ‘Razumovsky’ quartets are named for their commissioner, the Russian ambassador to Vienna – and the Count may well have been entertained by Beethoven’s unexpected treatment of a Russian folksong in the rumbustious Scherzo. Presumably he was also moved by the beautiful Adagio, thought to have been composed while contemplating a starry sky.
