As the world was plunged into lockdown in the wake of COVID-19 last year, recorder virtuoso Genevieve Lacey began thinking about how she could collaborate with her fellow creatives to produce something that provided a sense of sanctuary.

Taking inspiration from the bower bird and its ability to create beautiful shelters out of myriad items, Lacey conceived of this exciting program full of old favourites and new works, much of the latter composed by dear colleagues she engaged. Originally intended as a recording project, Artistic Director Paul Kildea proposed that it instead become a stage production for Musica Viva.

Lacey’s brainchild is now an immersive concert performance, featuring dramaturgy by Ruth Little, sound by Jim Atkins, and lighting by Niklas Pajanti. Lacey herself is joined onstage by friend and colleague, the esteemed harpist Marshall McGuire, to present works spanning the baroque to the present day, with many exciting Australian premieres in the mix.

Listen to the Podcast

In Episode 5 of the podcast, Artistic Director Paul Kildea speaks with Genevieve Lacey. As he eloquently notes in the introduction, to simply refer to Genevieve as ‘a recorder player, is missing the point’, as she has forged a rich career, with credits as a performer, composer, and curator.
