Watch the video above for a demonstration of how to conduct a mirror movement activity with your class.
In this simple mirror movement activity our body becomes our instrument. Learning through the body is direct so students get to experience and identify, through movement and listening, the structure of phrases used in this piece.
This activity could be done with any piece of music either sitting or standing, as a warm-up; to foster focus and collaborative partner skills; and to develop aural skills and an understanding of different musical elements. Using props such as scarves is a great way to eliminate students’ self-consciousness by taking the focus off them and placing it instead on their movements.
