8 Mar - 8 Mar 2021

7PM AEDT

Acclaimed worldwide for her unparalleled command of a famously tricky instrument, Sydney oboist Diana Doherty joins her friends, the Streeton Trio, to perform masterpieces of the chamber music repertory.

Chamber music for oboe quartet is relatively rare, so this is a unique opportunity to experience this appealing combination from the comfort of your own home. The concert opens with a piece by Martinů, a genial, airy work, deceptively well-crafted, hinting at his habit of composing while out for a walk. The second is a world premiere by Western Australia’s Lachlan Skipworth, described by The Australian as possessing a ‘rare gift as a melodist’. His new Oboe Quartet is a musical portrait of the couple in whose memory it was commissioned. It reflects their shared love of Bach, their hobbies, and characters, in its vibrant colours, interlaced lines and lively textures. Anne and Alan Blanckensee are part of Musica Viva’s history and it is a joy to bring this work to audiences Australia-wide.

LACHLAN SKIPWORTH

Lachlan Skipworth writes music as though he’s practising a martial art: a rare combination of elegance and strength. Lachlan’s Oboe Quartet will be premiered by Diana Doherty and the Streeton Trio for their national tour beginning in March 2021.

Hailed by Limelight as expressing ‘both exquisite delicacy and tremendous power’, Perth composer Lachlan Skipworth writes orchestral, chamber, vocal and experimental music. His vivid musical language is coloured by three years spent in Japan where his immersion in the study of the shakuhachi bamboo flute inevitably became a part of his muse. Winning the 2014 Paul Lowin Prize for orchestral composition established Skipworth’s reputation and led to a string of major commissions.
