Julia Fredersdorff & Nicholas Pollock

Baroque music of passion and fantasy

Julia Fredersdorff & Nicholas Pollock

Julia Fredersdorff Baroque violin

Nicholas Pollock Theorbo

Julia Fredersdorff is one of Australia’s most dynamic violinists exploring the music of the Baroque period. She performs regularly as concertmaster for the Orchestra of the Antipodes, is Artistic Director of the Tasmanian baroque ensemble, Van Diemen's Band, and a founding member of period string quartet, Ironwood and the twice ARIA-nominated baroque trio, Latitude 37. In 2019, she is joined by Nicholas Pollock, a multi-instrumentalist specialising in early plucked strings who performs in Australia and internationally with leading Australian ensembles, including the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and Australian Chamber Orchestra, and is co-director of the dynamic Ensemble 642 which explores the art of Baroque continuo playing.

Stylus Fantasticus

Julia and Nicholas’ program will take the audience on a journey to the heart of early Baroque Europe in an intimate program of music from 17th Century Italy and Germany. The magical combination of violin and Theorbo (Bass lute) is the ideal intimate combination for this beautiful selection of hand-picked, musical jewels written in the form known as 'Stylus Fantasticus'.

The 17th Century was a highly experimental time, when Instrumental music was being pushed to the height of virtuosity with a sense of freedom, improvisation and great contrast. Composers and performers set out to move and communicate with their audience, from the height of serenity to sudden improvisatory flights of fancy, this is music that never fails to grab your attention with its haunting passion and atmospheric beauty.
