The Idea of North

As near as dammit to vocal perfection.
THE COURIER MAIL

The Idea of North defy categorisation. As a quartet of musicians, their voices are instruments: soprano, alto, tenor and bass, with a little bit of percussion thrown in. Their sound and style is distinct, yet they cross many musical genres: jazz, folk, gospel, pop, classical and even comedy.

Their arrangements are extraordinary. They take songs you know and songs you don’t know, and create songs you’ll love. But it’s not just about the music.

What started out as four students from the Canberra School of Music at the Australian National University kicking around as friends, resulted in a group that has won international recognition, taken home awards such as the USA’s ‘Harmony Sweepstakes’ and Contemporary A Cappella Recording awards for Best Jazz Album & Best Jazz, as well as mesmerising fans across Australia and around the world.

Their live performances are dynamic and engaging. They have an ability to connect with their audience through not only their passion for music, but also their relaxed presentation and endearing sense of humour. After just one performance, you walk away feeling like you’ve known them for years.
