Australian Music Days

Australian Music Days provide Secondary teachers an inspiring and interactive forum in which to explore the Music syllabus topics of Australian Music, Music for Small Ensembles, An Instrument and its Repertoire and Music of the Last 25 Years (Australian focus) with your students. Elective music students attending the Australian Music Days will be provided with a unique opportunity to:

  • learn about the creative and technical art of composition from the perspective of prominent Australian composers

  • explore the compositional process from guiding influences through to performance

  • see and hear a live performance of a selected work by professional musicians

Teachers and students attending the Australia Music Day will also receive a resource pack containing notes and reference materials to assist with follow-up in the classroom.

 

1. Australian Music Day Carl Vine with Katia Skanavi

Carl Vine and pianist Katia Skanavi will explore his new composition Piano Sonata No. 3 and other works.

Carl Vine first came to prominence as a composer for dance, especially through collaborations with Graeme Murphy and the Sydney Dance Company. He is well known for his stage and screen scores, electronic, piano, choral, orchestral and chamber music.

Born in Moscow, Katia Skanavi will perform Carl Vine’s Piano Sonata No. 3. She is both a concerto soloist and a chamber musician and is prized for her virtuosity and thoughtful interpretation.

2. Australian Music Day Graeme Leak with B’tutta

Graeme Leak and percussion group B’tutta will discuss the art of composition through his compositions HELLO ? (a ring tone fantasy), Spirit Dance and other works for large scale public events.

Graeme Leak is an acclaimed performer and composer with a background in percussion and drumming. Graeme's diverse activities include a decade of contemporary music performance championing new Australian composition, with many innovative projects in music-theatre, dance and improvised music.

B’tutta is a highly motivating and talented percussion quartet that has many years of experience, performing both in Australia and South-East Asia. Each member of the group has extensive musical performance experience and groups in a range of genres from jazz, rock and pop bands to art music groups and musicals.
